Employers or recruiters request the list of references after taking your initial interview, but that is not a rule some of the employers will ask it much before your interview and can ask for it when you are submitting your job application documents.


Prepare References Before You Need Them

One of the benefits of keep ready all the references ready with you is that you will not scramble when the employer or hiring manager asks for them at any stage of your job applying process.

If the references were asked to you during your interview process, it would become challenging for you to arrange for them as you are already busy with your interview stages or job applying process. It will become very stressful for you to organize the references in between, and if it is any handwritten note or references, then it will be worse to arrange it.

It is always advisable to keep ready all the references and contact details with you much before your job application so that later when you are in the middle of the process you don't have to give extra time for it and your job applying process will be smooth and stress-free.


Consider Whom To Ask For A Reference

You should always have four to five names in your references list. Make a list of previous managers, associates, colleagues, sellers, or clients who know are well aware of your skills, abilities, and if they know you personally, that will be best. In case you are still studying in the college or a fresh graduate you can always include your professors and teachers in your reference list.

In case you are newer to the workforce or have not worked in the last few years, you can likewise approach somebody for a character or individual reference. It can be written by your friends, neighbors with whom you have not worked but they know you personally and well aware of your skills and attribute, they can attest to your skills and expertise.

  • You trust they know enough about your hard-working attitude to allow you to be your reference.
  • You figure they will give you a positive reference. In case you are not having many positive relations with that person in the recent past, or you think they do not have the soft corner for you in their heart, it will be important not to include them in your reference list.
  • You should have an idea that they will give professional comments and remarks which can be suitable for any of the employer. There can be a possibility that you have the contact who is having very high and professional opinion about you, but is not that good when it comes to writing the comments or remarks, then you can always opt for another reference.
  • You should always choose the references which are easy to connect with because your employer or recruiter will go to contact them and it will be rude when they find it hard to communicate with any of your references. You should always exclude the references from your list who are traveling or don't pick up the phone or reply emails promptly.


Ways To Ask For The References

When you are selecting your contacts as a reference, you need to take their permission. You can always inform them by sending them a letter, email or LinkedIn message; you can even contact them by phone to ask for their permission.

Inform them about the kind of job or position you are applying for so that they can update their resume as per it which will be suitable for your field of job. At that point ask, "Do you believe you know my skills and work nature so that you can write a good recommendation letter for me?" or "Do you think you could give me a decent reference?"

It is important to frame your questions in this manner so that if your contact does not want to write a great recommendation, he will feel natural about it.

Additionally, make certain to offer every potential reference the latest copy of your resume and some other information about your abilities, so he or she can be stayed up with the latest with your experiences.


Make Your List

The time when you got decent or positive responses from few of your contacts to be your reference, then you can make your reference list. Try not to list references on your resume or cover letter.
